Assistant Professor, Theories of Film and Media

The Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara is seeking to fill one faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to commence July 1, 2013.
We are looking for a highly interdisciplinary scholar whose research focuses on theories of film and media, especially innovative approaches that transgress conventional disciplinary boundaries. Research areas might include (but are not limited to) intermediality, narrative theory, cognitive studies, aesthetics, phenomenology, media archaeology, and affect theory.The ideal candidate will have the capacity and intellectual background to teach in the core areas of our film, television, and digital media curriculum and a research profile in theories and philosophies of cinema and/or electronic or digital media. The candidate will be expected to teach classical and/or contemporary film and media theory at the undergraduate and graduate levels, develop specialized courses in his/her areas of expertise, and build upon a curriculum that embraces national and transnational film and media cultures.

Assistant Professor, Visual Studies/anthropology of art, critical image theory

In an initiative to broaden our conceptual coverage and our representation of methods and theories in interdisciplinary visual studies, the Department of History of Art, University of California at Berkeley seeks a specialist in the anthropology of art and/or critical theory of image-making broadly defined, especially if focused on key technologies of image- and object-production and their histories and economies. Substantial PhD-level training in non-Western or Western arts and visual cultures is desirable; evidence of comparative, analytical, or historiographical work beyond particular area/period studies in art history is essential. Teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels is expected; located in a global research university in a dynamic metropolitan area, the Department administers a large and vital major and an internationally prominent PhD program. Affiliation with or cross-appointment in other programs on campus is possible where relevant.
